I saw about eighty or ninety go off. When they left they ordered me not to leave without their instructions. Then they shouted from the shore and said I could go. Then I got up anchor and went to Sanshui. I then handed over to No. 1 pilot. I first heard the firing at Su Man Sha about 14 hours from Samshui. The five boats came from Fu Wan. These boats were waiting for the Sainam near the shore.

Mahmet Khan declared;-

I am a watchman. I commenced watch at 6 p.m. near the stairs starboard side. I saw a Chinaman come from the 2nd Class. He got hold of my hands. In the meantime ten men rushed out at me; I was caught hold of by four men, they snatched my revolver. I was kept downstairs and not allowed up, and four men showed their revolvers at me and told me not to sing out. I struggled with them and one struck me on the head with the butt of a revolver. The other men then searched the passengers. One shot hit my heel.

I was chased by the pirates. The iron rail was open as it was daylight. One rail is only shut at 10 p.m. and the other (starboard) is always open.
